United State Department of Defense

From Whirlwind to Mitre: The R&d Story of the Sage Air Defense Computer by Kent C. Redmond, This book presents an organizational united state department of defense and social history of one of the foundational projects of the computer era: the development of the SAGE (Semi-Automatic Ground Environment) air defense system, from its first test at Bedford, Massachusetts, in 1951, to the installation of the first unit of the New York Air Defense Sector of the SAGE system, in 1958. The idea for SAGE grew out of Project Whirlwind, a wartime computer development effort, when the U.S. Department of Defense realized that the Whirlwind computer might anchor a continent-wide advance warning system. Developed by MIT engineers united state department of defense and scientists for the U.S. Air Force, SAGE monitored North American skies for possible attack by manned aircraft united state department of defense and missiles for twenty-five years.Aside from its strategic importance, SAGE set the foundation for mass data-processing systems united state department of defense and foreshadowed many computer developments of the 1960s. The heart of the system, the AN/FSQ-7, was the first computer to have an internal memory composed of "magnetic cores," thousands of tiny ferrite rings that served as reversible electromagnets. SAGE also introduced computer-driven displays, online terminals, time sharing, high-reliability computation, digital signal processing, digital transmission over telephone lines, digital track-while-scan, digital simulation, computer networking, united state department of defense and duplex computing. The book shows how the wartime alliance of engineers, scientists, united state department of defense and the military exemplified by MIT's Radiation Lab helped to transform research united state department of defense and development practice in the United States through the end of the Cold War period.

Preventive Defense: An New Security Strategy for America by Ashton B. Carter, X William J. Perry united state department of defense and Ashton B. Carter, two of the world's foremost defense authorities, draw on their experience as leaders of the U.S. Defense Department to propose a new American security strategy for the twenty-first century. After a century in which aggression had to be defeated in two world wars united state department of defense and then deterred through a prolonged cold war, the authors argue for a strategy centered on prevention. Now that the cold war is over, it is necessary to rethink the risks to U.S. security. The A list--threats to U.S. survival--is empty today. The B list--the two major regional contingencies in the Persian Gulf united state department of defense and on the Korean peninsula that dominate Pentagon planning united state department of defense and budgeting--pose imminent threats to U.S. interests but not to survival. And the C list--such headline-grabbing places as Kosovo, Bosnia, Somalia, Rwanda, united state department of defense and Haiti--includes important contingencies that indirectly affect U.S. security but do not directly threaten U.S. interests. Thus the United States is enjoying a period of unprecedented peace united state department of defense and influence; but foreign policy united state department of defense and defense leaders cannot afford to be complacent. The authors' preventive defense strategy concentrates on the dangers that, if mismanaged, have the potential to grow into true A-list threats to U.S. survival in the next century. These include Weimar Russia: failure to establish a self-respecting place for the new Russia in the post-cold war world, allowing it to descend into chaos, isolation, united state department of defense and aggression as Germany did after World War I; Loose Nukes: failure to reduce united state department of defense and secure the deadly legacy of the cold war--nuclear, chemical, united state department of defense and biological weapons in Russia united state department of defense and the rest of the former Soviet Union; A Rising China Turned Hostile:failure to shape China's rise to Asian superpower status so that it emerges as a partner rather than an adversary; Proliferation: spread of weapons of mass destruction; united state department of defense and Catastrophic Terrorism: increase in the scope united state department of defense and intensity of transnational terrorism.
